Waikiki is world-famous for its iconic beach and sweeping views of Diamond Head—but it’s also almost always packed with tourists. If you’re a photographer or planning a session and want that same island magic without the crowds, there are some beautiful, underrated spots just minutes away. Here are five of the best locations near Waikiki that offer space, scenery, and serenity for photography.

1. Ala Moana Beach / Magic Island Sunset and Daylight
Just a short 5-10 minutes drive (or even walk) from Waikiki, Magic Island is one of my favorite photography spots near Waikiki—just minutes away but with a completely different vibe. This location offers the perfect blend of lush greenery and beautiful beach views, all in one spot. One of the highlights is the iconic Waikiki Lookout, where you can capture both Diamond Head and the city skyline in a single breathtaking frame. The sunsets here are absolutely stunning, casting warm, golden light over the ocean. Unlike the busy streets of Waikiki, Magic Island is much more peaceful, making it an ideal setting for relaxed and memorable photos.
2. Hilton Lagoon (Sunrise)
Hilton Lagoon is a hidden gem for sunrise photography, just steps from Waikiki but often overlooked. Early in the morning, the lagoon is calm and peaceful, with still waters that reflect the soft pastel colors of the rising sun. Surrounded by swaying palm trees and with a clear view of Diamond Head in the distance, it creates a dreamy tropical setting—perfect for romantic portraits or serene solo shots. The combination of water, greenery, and morning light makes this spot feel like a private oasis. It's a quiet, beautiful alternative to the busy beach, especially at sunrise when the world is just starting to wake up.
Kahala Beach
Kahala Beach is one of Oahu’s best-kept secrets—just a 15-minute drive from Waikiki, but it feels like a world away. Tucked into a quiet, upscale neighborhood, this beach offers a peaceful, uncrowded setting with soft sand, swaying palm trees, and calm, shallow waters. It’s the perfect spot for dreamy, natural portraits without the distractions of tourists or beachgoers. The scenery here is effortlessly elegant—ideal for romantic sessions, elopements, or intimate family photos. Whether you're shooting in the golden morning light or the soft glow of late afternoon, Kahala Beach offers a timeless, serene backdrop with a true “private island” feel.
