PHOTOGRAPHER RECOMMENDED LOCATIONS
A complete guide to 15 photographer-recommended photoshoot spots — from hidden sunrise coves on the East Shore to lagoon-side sunsets on the Leeward coast, curated by local Honolulu photographer Wade Wu.
Why Oahu Is the Ultimate Photography Destination
Nowhere in the world does light land on a landscape quite the way it does in Hawaii. There's a quality to the golden hour on Oahu — warm, expansive, unhurried — that makes every session feel effortless.
As a professional photographer based in Honolulu, I've spent years exploring every corner of this island. From the dramatic lava rock coastlines of the East Shore to the calm lagoon waters of Ko Olina, from the lush Windward valleys backed by the Ko'olau Mountains to the iconic sweep of Diamond Head over Waikiki — Oahu offers an extraordinary range of photographic settings within a single island.
Whether you're planning a surprise proposal, a family beach session, wedding portraits, or maternity photography, choosing the right location makes the difference between beautiful photos and truly unforgettable ones. The guide below covers every location I regularly recommend to clients — with honest detail about the best time to shoot, crowd levels, session types, and what makes each spot unique.
Oahu Photography Locations Near Waikiki
The Waikiki area is where most visitors are based, and it delivers far more photographic variety than its tourist reputation suggests. These three locations sit within 10–15 minutes of each other and work for nearly every session type and time of day.
One of my favorite locations on the island, and for good reason — Magic Island offers something genuinely rare in Waikiki: both greenery and beach scenery in a single frame. The peninsula juts into the ocean just minutes from the heart of Waikiki, giving you the famous Waikiki Lookout view where Diamond Head rises over the city skyline behind you. Sunset here is spectacular, with the western sky turning pink and gold over the lagoon's mirror-like surface.
Unlike Waikiki Beach itself, Magic Island is quieter and more photogenic for portrait sessions. The grassy areas near the water's edge provide natural framing, while the shoreline offers open beach shots. This spot is ideal for proposals, families, and couples looking for diversity in a single location — we can move from ocean shots to park settings to the iconic Diamond Head lookout within a short walk.
Waikiki Beach is one of the most photographed places in the world — and for good reason. The early morning light casts a soft golden hue over the ocean and Diamond Head crater, creating a picturesque backdrop that feels classic Hawaii. Arriving at sunrise allows us to capture the serene beauty of the beach before crowds arrive, with unobstructed views and a peaceful atmosphere.
The eastern end of Waikiki Beach, closest to Diamond Head, is quieter and often nearly deserted at sunrise — the most photogenic spot on the whole stretch. Tranquil waters and gentle morning waves create ideal conditions for both candid and posed shots. The combination of iconic skyline, ocean, and Diamond Head makes Waikiki an essential location for anyone visiting Oahu.
Situated at the western end of Waikiki, the Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon at Hilton Hawaiian Village is one of the most serene early morning photography settings on the island. Arriving at sunrise, you capture calm waters reflecting the soft hues of the morning sky, with Diamond Head providing a stunning backdrop. The lagoon's mirror-like surface creates a unique visual quality that's very different from open ocean beach shots.
The palm-lined shores, gentle waves, and absence of crowds during sunrise hours make this ideal for a peaceful, unhurried session. For families who want a calm setting where young children can play safely in shallow water, or for maternity sessions that benefit from soft reflective light, Hilton Lagoon is a consistent favorite.
East Shore Photography Spots — Dramatic Coastal Scenery
The southeastern coast of Oahu — from Sandy Beach to Makapu'u — is where the island reveals its more dramatic, wild side. Lava rock formations, sea cliffs, crashing waves, and sweeping ocean views make this the most visually dynamic region on the island. The East Shore faces directly into the sunrise, which means early morning sessions here have exceptional light quality.
Located approximately 35 minutes from Waikiki on Oahu's southeastern coast, Sandy Beach Park is one of the most visually striking photography locations on the island. Known for powerful waves, black lava rock formations, and expansive sandy shores, this beach offers a setting that combines natural beauty with dramatic coastal energy that simply doesn't exist near Waikiki.
The contrast between the deep blue ocean and the dark lava rocks creates bold, graphic images that stand apart from typical Hawaii beach photos. Sandy Beach faces directly east, so it's exceptional for sunrise sessions — the sun rises over the ocean directly in front of you, casting soft pastel skies across the scene. The lava rock areas provide natural structure for posing couples and creating intimate framing, while the wide sandy stretches allow for open, expansive images.
Nestled beneath the Halona Blowhole Lookout on Oahu's southeastern shore, Halona Beach Cove — also known as Eternity Beach — is one of the most intimate and dramatic photoshoot locations on the island. The cove's combination of rugged lava rock formations, soft sandy shores, and turquoise waters creates a setting unlike anything else in Hawaii. It's secluded, genuinely beautiful, and carries a quiet magic that clients remember long after the session.
Accessing the cove requires a short hike down a rocky path from the Halona Blowhole parking area — it's a manageable walk but one worth knowing about in advance, especially for maternity clients. The effort is immediately rewarded with a tranquil environment that's rarely crowded during sunrise hours. This peaceful atmosphere allows for uninterrupted sessions with soft, golden morning light wrapping around the cove walls.
Makapu'u Beach Park on Oahu's southeastern coast is renowned for its breathtaking sunrise views backed by rugged sea cliffs, with the iconic Makapu'u Lighthouse perching on the headland above. This combination — pristine sand, tide pools, lava rock formations, and a lighthouse-topped cliff — creates one of the most cinematic photography settings on the island.
The early morning light casts a warm glow across the cliffs and sand, highlighting textures and depth that midday light simply can't replicate. The beach's tide pools provide diverse compositional options, and the relatively uncrowded nature of the location during sunrise hours allows for relaxed, unhurried sessions. Rabbit Island sits just offshore, adding a distinctive silhouette to the horizon in wider shots.
Kailua Beach Park
Kailua Beach Park on Oahu's Windward side is consistently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the United States — and it's a personal favorite of mine for photography sessions. The beach features an unusually wide stretch of soft, powdery sand, calm turquoise waters, and a backdrop of the dramatic Ko'olau Mountain Range rising in lush green behind the shore. It's the kind of setting that needs almost no direction — everything in frame is beautiful.
Kailua has a distinctly different character from the beaches near Waikiki. It's quieter, more residential, and feels genuinely local rather than touristy. The town of Kailua itself is charming and just a short walk from the beach, making it easy to incorporate different settings into a longer session. Sessions here work beautifully at sunrise, when the mountains catch the first light, and in the late afternoon when the Windward trade winds keep the air cool and comfortable.
Waimanalo Beach
Waimanalo Beach stretches for nearly three miles along Oahu's southeastern coast, backed by the deep green Ko'olau Mountains and fringed with ironwood trees — making it one of the most lush and wide-open photography settings on the island. Despite being one of the longest beaches in Hawaii, Waimanalo remains largely off the tourist trail, offering a genuine sense of space and privacy that's increasingly hard to find.
The combination of white sand, clear calm water, and mountain backdrop creates a uniquely Hawaiian image quality — not just "beach," but the full tropical landscape. For families who want room for children to run and play, or couples looking for expansive framing, Waimanalo's scale delivers. Sunrise here is particularly dramatic, with the first light catching the mountain ridgeline before touching the beach below.
Windward Coast Photography Locations — Lush and Dramatic
The Windward (eastern) side of Oahu is where the Ko'olau Mountains drop dramatically to the ocean, creating a landscape of breathtaking scale. Lush valleys, botanical gardens, and some of the world's most beautiful beaches sit within a few miles of each other. For sessions that want something beyond the typical beach photo — an epic, layered landscape with mountains and ocean together — the Windward Coast is unmatched.
Lanikai Beach
Lanikai Beach is, without exaggeration, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world — and it's a personal favorite of mine for couples and wedding photography. Consistently ranked in the top ten beaches globally, Lanikai offers powdery white sand, shallow turquoise water of extraordinary clarity, and the iconic Mokulua Islands ("The Mokes") sitting just offshore. The setting is otherworldly.
The beach is a residential neighborhood with limited access points, which keeps crowds manageable. Sunrise sessions at Lanikai are particularly spectacular — the two offshore islands catch the first light and reflect it back across the water, creating a quality of luminance that's unlike anywhere else on Oahu. For couples, engagement sessions, and wedding portraits that need to feel genuinely extraordinary, Lanikai is the benchmark.
Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden
For clients who want something beyond the beach — verdant, lush, and dramatically different — Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden in Kaneohe is one of Oahu's most photogenic locations. The garden sits at the base of the Ko'olau Mountains, which rise almost vertically behind the landscape to create a backdrop of staggering scale. On misty mornings, clouds cling to the ridgelines and the whole scene takes on an almost mythical quality.
The garden's wide palm-tree-lined paths, reflection ponds, and botanical diversity allow for a wide variety of compositions within a single session. For maternity sessions that benefit from soft natural framing, or for families who want something different from the standard beach photo, Ho'omaluhia delivers a distinctly Oahu experience that's genuinely unique. The green palette of the garden creates beautiful, natural color harmony in photos.
Kualoa Beach Park
Kualoa Beach Park, along the Kamehameha Highway on the Windward Coast, offers one of Oahu's most distinctive and instantly recognizable backdrops — the Ko'olau Mountains rising sharply behind the shore, with Mokolii Island (Chinaman's Hat) sitting in the ocean just offshore. The combination of mountains, ocean, and the small conical island creates a composition that is uniquely and unmistakably Oahu.
This area — near Kualoa Ranch where Jurassic Park, Jumanji, and many other films have been shot — has a cinematic quality to it. The beach is calm and protected, making it comfortable for families. Sessions here work best in the morning when the mountains are lit from the east and the water is still. The diversity of backgrounds within walking distance is exceptional.
South Shore & Kahala Photography Spots
Kahala is located in the southeast of the island, about 15–20 minutes from Waikiki — making it one of the most convenient alternatives to the busy Waikiki strip. If you want pure sea and beach photography in a private, uncrowded setting close to your hotel, Kahala is consistently excellent. The palm trees, ocean, and sandy shore create a natural composition full of character without the noise and distraction of tourist areas.
Kahala Beach is very quiet — you can count on having sections of beach largely to yourself, even at midday. The calm, shallow waters are ideal for families with young children. The palm trees lean naturally toward the water, creating organic framing for portraits. This is a location that photographs beautifully at both sunrise and sunset.
Leeward (West Side) Photography Locations
Located in Kapolei on Oahu's Leeward side, the Ko Olina Lagoons are one of the island's premier sunset photography locations. Four man-made coves feature calm, crystal-clear waters, pristine white sandy beaches, and the west-facing orientation that delivers stunning views of the sun dropping below the ocean horizon. In golden hour, the sky, water, and sand all catch the warm light simultaneously — creating images with a consistent quality of warmth and depth that's difficult to replicate elsewhere.
Each lagoon has a slightly different character — some have rocky outcrops, others more open sand and grassy areas — allowing for diverse compositions in a single session.
The relatively protected, resort-maintained environment is ideal for clients who want a polished, elegant setting. Ko Olina works for virtually every session type and is a particularly popular choice for wedding and couples photography due to the romantic quality of the evening light.
Lanai Lookout
Lanai Lookout sits on the southeastern shore along Kalanianaole Highway and offers one of Oahu's most panoramic ocean viewpoints — on clear days, you can see the island of Maui and even Molokai on the horizon. The dramatic lava rock formations in the foreground, the deep blue of the open Pacific, and the wide sky above create a setting of real grandeur that photographs well in any light.
In winter months, this is also a prime whale-watching location — humpback whales are frequently visible from shore, and I've captured them breaching in the background of client sessions here. Lanai Lookout works best for couples and more adventurous sessions that want dramatic, open-sky imagery rather than sheltered beach portraits.
The area around the Halona Blowhole Lookout offers dramatic scenery even before descending to the cove below. The parking area sits high on the cliffs overlooking the southeastern coastline, with sweeping views of the ocean, the lava coast, and — on clear days — Molokai in the distance. The elevated perspective creates wide, cinematic images of the coast that feel genuinely epic.
Combined with the Halona Beach Cove access below (listed at #5), this area is one of the most versatile short-drive photography destinations on the East Shore. You can move between the cliff-top views and the intimate cove in a single session, covering two distinctly different visual environments within a short walk.
Best Times and Conditions for an Oahu Photoshoot
In Hawaii, light is everything. The quality, direction, and color of light changes hour by hour — and booking at the right time of day is one of the single most important decisions you'll make for your session. Here's how each time window looks and what to expect.
5:45 – 7:00 am
Sunrise Session
The East Shore faces directly into the sunrise, producing soft pastel skies, calm seas, and almost no crowd. Air temperature is cool and comfortable. Light quality is the most beautiful of the day — soft, directional, and warm. The trade-off: it's an early start. Best for Sandy Beach, Halona Cove, Makapu'u, Kailua, and Lanikai.
5:00 – 7:00 pm
Golden Hour / Sunset
The classic Hawaii photoshoot experience. The West and South-facing beaches — Ko Olina, Magic Island, and Waikiki — catch the full warmth of the setting sun. The sky turns orange, pink, and gold for 30–40 minutes before sunset, and stays beautifully lit for 15 minutes after. The most popular time slot, so early booking is essential. Best for Ko Olina, Magic Island, and Kahala.
8:00 am – 3:00 pm
Midday / Daylight
Midday sessions are absolutely possible and can produce beautiful images — they require more experience to manage Hawaii's strong overhead sun. I use natural shade, reflective surfaces, and careful positioning to create flattering light. Shaded locations like Ho'omaluhia Garden and Kailua's ironwood grove work best. Best for Kualoa, Ho'omaluhia, and north end of Kailua Beach.
